End of Life: Windows 7

At the time of this writing it is a fast approaching 14 months until the extended support of Windows 7 is officially ended. As of January 14 2020, Microsoft will completely end their support for Windows 7. What does this mean for one of the most stable and beloved Windows Operating Systems since Windows XP? It means that there will be no additional updates, it will no longer meet HIPAA and FINRA security standards, and will eventually become a prime target for malicious attacks.

Does this mean that you can’t continue to use Windows 7 after the End of Life has passed?

Not necessarily, there will be a small window of time to allow you to update your computers as needed. You can either choose to upgrade the Windows 7 systems to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Choose to update the whole system to a new tower or laptop. Or you can simply choose to roll the dice and continue using Windows 7 as is. However that last option has a few caveats: namely that you should not have that Windows 7 system connected to any kind of network with internet access.

This option is usually reserved for systems that are running what’s known as “legacy software”. This software is typically used for Point-of-Sale and internal filing systems that do not require internet access to operate properly. However if you have these types of software, now would be the perfect time to look at upgrading to software that is compatible with Windows 10.

As for the option of upgrading to Windows 8.1, this is to be taken with a grain of salt.

As Windows 8.1 is the next scheduled for End of Life in 2023, a mere 3 years after Windows 7. Our recommendation is to update your systems as far as possible, including not only the Operating System (Windows) but also the software that will be installed on that system (QuickBooks, Office, etc.) as this will extend the overall life and upgrade window that you will have in the future.

Some of the most powerful and affordable systems ever are out right now and only officially support Windows 10. So if you are looking for a productivity boost as well, then now is the time to get a new Windows 10 system to avoid a panicked rush to meet your needs.
