There is a new infection targeting Mac computers named Silver Sparrow.
This infection is unique in the fact that it runs on the newest processor types, as well as the more common Intel processors. It also has no actual payload, and does not actually perform any task other than to confirm that it can connect to the server that will send it commands. It also has the rather unique feature in that it can also be removed remotely by the infector.
This particular infection has been discovered on just under 30,000 Macs. It is currently in over 153 countries as of the time of this writing. This count might not be completely accurate as this includes only the currently discovered infections.
There are other infections that can target Mac users, and other damaging software in the wild, but this one is unique in it being only the second that has been discovered that is available to run natively on the newest processor type. The first one discovered would set your search engine on your browser to be a specific site serving ads and would also serve even further ads on pages you visited linked from that search engine.
Normally, older apps can run on the new ARM1 processor and run a bit slower as they were made for Intel processors. Emulation is normally used so that older apps can run, but something that is made specifically for the ARM processor is able to run natively without the need for emulation.
It is always a good idea to ensure that you have a current backup of all of your important files, and that you use both a physical backup, as well as a cloud based one. If your computer does have issues, Mac or PC, bring it by. We will gladly take a look.
