Intel Updates CPUs in order to be immune to Meltdown and Spectre bugs

Spectre/Meltdown CPU bug

Two new CPU bugs have been discovered by Google’s Project Zero team this week.

The bug can potentially be exploited on processors created over the last 20 years. Attacks can run some JavaScript code in a website in order to access active memory on your system which might contain keystrokes, passwords or other vital information.

Just like other bugs and exploits that are released, there are fixes for these bugs. For the savvy computer user who’s computer running updates properly should have nothing to worry about. Microsoft/Intel are continuing to write patches for these two CPU bugs known as “Spectre” and “Meltdown”.

Patches roll out typically on Tuesdays from Microsoft and they will be applied then; however, if you have Windows 7, 8, or 10 you can manually update today and will not need to wait until “Patch Tuesday” unfortunately Apple has currently not released their patch but is expected to soon.

If you are not sure whether or not you are protected, please feel free to give Frankenstein a call and ask them to check the update settings and or service on your computer and ensure that the Windows Update is working properly and also applying updates as needed.

Some say that the CPU being patched does have some performance drawback, but it is much better than having your important information stolen from you. It may be a couple of weeks before any bugs introduced by the patches themselves will be worked out. It is too early to tell as the patches are still rolling out.
