Time to buy a new Computer?

  • by
new workstation

Has your system been running substantially slow lately?

Have you had your system for 5 years or more?

Are you still running Windows 7 as your operating system?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions it may be time to go ahead and consider purchasing a new workstation.

The reason behind this is that it is a general rule of thumb is that once your computer gets to a certain age and especially if you are still running Windows 7 it is actually more cost effective to just purchase a new workstation with updated hardware and Windows 10 already installed on it than upgrading a system that is 5 years or older because you have to take into consideration that hardware components are going to start to fail and it does become expensive to replace certain components.

The best way to compare it would be to think about your computer as if it were a car, over time wear and tear causes components to start to die and it really boils down to whether you want to keep paying for repairing or replacing those components with an older model when you finally realize after time that you could just simply obtain a new vehicle. The same goes for computers.

Most people do have trouble however knowing what they should purchase when deciding on getting a new system and when they go to a store such as “Best Buy” and they get duped into purchasing a system that does not have the specifications they need and end up spending more money than they should.

The main components you need to look out for are the version of Windows you need, the CPU, the RAM (memory), and the hard drive (to include how much space is needed). The main difference between Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro is that the Pro version comes with the ability to set up a remote desktop or RDP and also it has the option for BitLocker which is an encryption method, and the Home version does not have those options.

Next, it is important to get a system that has at least an i5 CPU as if you get an i3 your performance will suffer. They do offer an i7 but that is usually overkill unless you are using your system for gaming or graphic design purposes. When it comes to your RAM (memory) it would be best to get at least 16GB. A lot of standard systems come with only 8GB which will once again cause a drop in performance.

Lastly, when it comes to your hard drive make sure you are looking for a system that comes with an SSD (Solid State Drive) which are much much faster than the older mechanical drives and have significantly dropped in price recently.
